In order to preserve the integrity of the Villa Empain, the Boghossian Foundation launches a new phase of restoration works in 2025.
The Villa Empain, a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture designed by Michel Polak at the request of Baron Louis Empain, is an invaluable heritage landmark.
In 2010, after a complete and exemplary restoration, crowned with the Europa Nostra Prize, the Boghossian Foundation opened the doors of the Villa Empain as a Centre for Art and a platform for dialogue between cultures. For the past 15 years, it has strived to safeguard its beauty and authenticity while making it a place open to all.
The restoration of the terrace
Over a period of six months, the tiled terrace at the rear of the Villa Empain will undergo consolidation and a faithful reconstruction of the original slab design.
Built in 1930 and overlooking the swimming pool, the terrace is a key feature of the building’s architecture and stands above technical and storage areas.
Studies conducted with a specialised engineering office have revealed problems of water infiltration and structural corrosion, locally causing cracks and a weakening of load-bearing elements. To protect this unique heritage, the Foundation is carrying out a complete renewal of the waterproofing and tiling, as well as the repair or replacement of the structural parts that require it.
Particular care is given to the choice of tiles. Research in the archives has uncovered the original designs selected by the architect Michel Polak. The replaced tiles will therefore follow a pattern rigorously faithful to the spirit and aesthetics of the original, this time crafted in the original material: white granite, as used on the façades of the building.
Finally, special attention is paid to the phasing of the works: they are organised in such a way as to ensure that the museum remains open, and that the garden and swimming pool remain accessible throughout the entire restoration period.
These interventions will ensure the long-term preservation of the Villa Empain’s architectural and technical integrity, while guaranteeing the comfort of its visitors.
This restoration is made possible thanks to the valuable support of urban.brussels.
