Is Strategic Europe well under way?

With Bernard Guetta, François-Xavier Bellamy, Pierre Haroche and Gaïdz Minassian

The war in Ukraine exposes the European Union in its security and political dimensions. Beyond the European front, the Union is also confronted with other strategic scenes from Iran to Africa. How can we think about strategy in this changing world? To discuss this, the Boghossian Foundation is pleased to welcome MEPs Bernard Guetta (Renew Europe) and François-Xavier Bellamy (Group of the European People’s Party), and researcher Pierre Haroche, lecturer in international security at Queen Mary University in London.

Bernard Guetta is a Member of the European Parliament since 2019 on the La République en marche list. A former journalist at Nouvel Observateur, then former editor-in-chief of L’Expansion, Nouvel Observateur, former editorialist at L’Express, former columnist at La Repubblica, Le Temps and Gazeta. Bernard Guetta won the Albert-London Prize in 1981 for his coverage of the crisis in Poland. He joined Le Monde in 1979 and left in 1990. He covered perestroika and glasnost for the evening paper. In 1991, he became a columnist at France Inter, on geopolitical subjects, until 2018. He is now a member of parliament. He is the author of thousands of articles and several books, including Dans l’Ivresse de l’Histoire (Flammarion, 2017) and L’Enquête hongroise (puis polonaise, italienne et autrichienne) (Flammarion, 2019).

 

François-Xavier Bellamy is a Member of the European Parliament on the Republican list. A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure, professor of philosophy and essayist, François-Xavier Bellamy was former deputy mayor of Versailles from 2008 to 2019. Since 2013, he has been hosting Les Soirées de la Philo in Paris, a series of fortnightly philosophy lectures open to the general public. For the past few months, he has been co-number two of the political group Les Républicains and is also an essayist, author of Les Déshérités (Plon, 2014) and Demeure: Pour échapper à l’ère du mouvement perpétuel (Grasset, 2018).

 

Pierre Haroche is a researcher in European Security at the Institut de Recherche Stratégique de l’École Militaire (IRSEM). A graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (rue d’Ulm, Paris) and a doctorate in political science from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, his research focuses on the theory of European integration, European defence cooperation and the evolution of European institutions. He contributes to numerous specialised journals, such as Champ de Mars, Journal of European Public Policy, European Security, Politique Européenne.

 

Gaïdz Minassian is a journalist at Le Monde and teaches at Sciences Po Paris.
